welcome to What Is This Regarding? where we take a critical lewk at wtf’s going on around us. life’s getting a little zeitgeistier these days and its time we talk about it.
you can’t go on the internet anymore without seeing william dafoe being fashun now that the zeitgeist chose him *has aime leon dore shot him for a campaign yet?* — it’s like we’re all being held in a chokehold that we must agree what is COOL so we can all be COOL.
but is being zeitgeisty COOL? or intrinsically a disaster?
with things like nicole kidman and her sparkly pinstripe suit - it makes you wonder if all of us laughing at the same thing cheekily is bringing us together or brainwashing us with wispy ideas that won’t latch for long. what’s more wispy than being able to literally buy this suit bc zeitgeist?
call me old school but i want something that’s here to stay. something that will last the test of time. like the peekaboo thong.
take lo fi, for example. this is both zeitgeisty AND grippy. for a few moments lo fi might have been a wisp - but btwn soundcloud rappers in the 2010s and the resurgence of digi cams in the now, lo fi is very much rooted and HERE TO STAY.
wisps in the zeitgeist worth honorable mention include butter, bows, corp-core, impractical sunglasses, tiny microbags, juuling, heelie sneakers, razr scooters, lip smackers.
sometimes in life, and in this newsletter, i don’t wrap up ideas. this is one of those times bc i just started watching yellow jackets and i rly need to know what happens in season 1 episode 4.
